Lavrov Attacks Missile Defense Proposals of U.S.
The U.S. proposals for stationing components of missile defense in Eastern Europe have lowered the chances for a compromise between Moscow and Washington, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced after meeting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington.
“We proceed with studying proposals that were submitted in writing. But it is clear already that it’s material rollback from the things voiced by the U.S. envoys in Moscow in early October,” Vesti TV Channel quoted Lavrov as saying.
The matter at stake is no longer transparency and trust in relation to facilities that the United States is still willing to station in Poland and the Czech Republic, Lavrov pointed out.
On October 12 in Moscow, defense and foreign ministers of Russia and the United States mulled over the missile defense issues, including implementation of the package cooperation proposal put forward by Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. Putin’s intitiative is an alternative to the U.S. plans of building the third missile defense shield in Europe.
