Russia Will Be Europe's Biggest Car Market
The auto market in Russia will soon be Europe's largest, says Luca Maestri, financial director of the European division of American giant General Motors. Maestri predicted that Russia would up to second place in sales in Europe, behind Germany, next year. He noted that more cars are sold in Russia than in Brazil or India.
GM expects to sell 250,000 cars in Russia this year and significantly more next year. The company will begin mass production of its vehicles in St. Petersburg in November 2008. Equipment will be installed in the new plant in January and test production will begin in September. The Chevrolet Captiva and Opel Antara will be made there.
GM makes cars and trucks in 33 countries. In 2006, 9.1 million of its vehicles were sold in the world. It sells Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, GM Daewoo, Holden, HUMMER, Opel, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn and Vauxhall makes. There are now about ten GM production and assembly plants in seven European countries.
