51 Killed in Russia This Year for Xenophobia Reasons
In Russia, over 170 attacks and conflicts have been provoked by xenophobia this year, Interfax reported Thursday, referring to Moscow Bureau for Human Rights Director Alexander Brod.
”In the past nine months of 2007, more than 170 attacks and conflicts owing to xenophobia have been registered in the Russian Federation. As a result of them, 51 persons were killed and at least 230 got injuries of different severity,” Brod said.

Most often, the persons are attacked in Moscow and the Moscow region. The Nizhni Novgorod region is the second in number of attacks and St. Petersburg completes the leading list.

“Sharp growth in violence owning to national hatred continues,” Brod went on. “The crimes committed because of xenophobia are getting more serious, the share of murders is widening and the crimes related to interethnic relations are expanding from megapolis to regional centers. The attention is drawn to the surge in clashes between skinheads and representatives of other subcultures of the youth.”

According to Brod, 48 were condemned from January to September for xenophobia attacks in Russia.
