EU Pleased With End of Gazprom-Ukraine Conflict
Gas supplies to Europe are secure from danger once Gazprom and Ukraine have reached an agreement, said EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs.
According to Piebalgs, the row of Gazprom and Kiev has been sorted out, but negotiations on the next year’s prices are still ahead. The EU will be keeping an eye on the situation, Piebalgs promised.
Of $2-billion debt of Ukraine to Gazprom, $1.2 billion will be settled by transferring to Gaz Export the gas that is currently stored in the underground storage facilities of RosUkrEnergo, Russia’s Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov announced October 9.
”Gazprom will be the owner [of this gas],” Zubkov said during the Moscow meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich. Among other purposes, Zubkov went on, this gas will go to execute export obligations of Gazprom Export.
The remaining $929 million, will be paid up from the own funds of UkrGaz-Energo and Neftegaz of Ukraine, Zubkov said.
