State Duma Members Ask Prime Minister About Price Growth
Russia’s State Duma has addressed Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov in an effort to make him report the reasons of the surge in prices for basic foodstuff in September through early October.
“The prices for flour, macaroni, bakery products, milk and dairy products, oil and some other foodstuff have grown essentially, which negatively affects social position of the poorest residents of the Russian Federation,” the State Duma members said in the address to the prime minister.

The legislators suggest holding joint meeting with the government’s spokesmen by October 15 and working out actions to stabilize the situation. “It could be necessary to take actions at legislative level,” said Andrey Isaev, who heads the State Duma’s Labor and Social Policy Committee.

The prices for 89 percent of foodstuff grew in September, according to the report of Russia’s Federal Statistics Service that shocked authorities. President Vladimir Putin hasn’t ignored the problem. “I’m concerned about the price growth, particularly for foodstuff,” Putin said during the Monday meeting with cabinet and urged the ministers not to shelve the issue.
