Italy Takes Hard Russia’s Gas Problems
Italy fears the problems with Russia’s gas deliveries to Ukraine may disrupt gas supplies to the Apennines. And those fears are probably well-justified, at least Gazprom doesn’t think gas clashes with Kiev have been settled in whole.
Italy's energy regulator AEEG Chairman Alessandro Ortis drew attention of the parliament’s committee to the problem after Gazprom announced they agreed about the gas debt of Ukraine. According to Ortis, Italy is to step up deliveries by 130 million cu meters each day to meet the rising demand.

Italy imports 85 percent of the gas it consumes.

In Gazprom, they don’t think the gas conflict with Ukraine has been settled in whole, at least Gazprom briefer Sergei Kuprianov made exactly that statement when interviewed by Vesti TV Channel.

”This situation is no news for our Ukrainian colleagues. We have been in tough negotiations with them for many months already. So, this information could be regarded as something new only for European consumers,” Kuprianov said.

Kiev intends to pay off the debt by November 1, 2007, doing it under control of Ukrainian government, Gazprom announced after the Moscow meeting of Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller with Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Minister Yuri Boiko.
