Georgia’s Opposition Campaigns against Saakashvili
Leaders of Georgian opposition called on the nation to rally in Tbilisi in front of the parliament on September 28 and set into motion the campaign against the rule of President Mikhail Saakashvili. According to the opposition, Saakashvili has unleashed large-scale political terror against the opponents.
The slogans of the opposition are to close ranks and to stand against the ruling power in Georgia. Some activists call for holding early parliamentary and presidential elections.
One of the accusations brought in against the authorities is today’s detention of former defense minister Irakli Okruashvili. The opposition claims that by arresting Okruashvili, Saakashvili has actually acknowledged the truth of all accusations that the ex-minister recently brought in against him.
The charges of Georgian prosecutors against Okruashvili are extortion, laundering and involvement in other illegal actions. The police detained 10 more people together with the former minister, including his driver and guards.
A few hours ago, the police clashed with Okruashvili supporters near the office of opposition For United Georgia. No details have been given so far.
