Georgia Shaped Plan to Attack Tskhinvali in Spring 2006
A special plan was elaborated in Tbilisi to execute an operation and capture Tskhinvali, said Irakli Okruashvili, who was once the defense minister in Georgia.
There was a detailed plan to liberate Tskhinvali, Okruashvili told Imedi TV Tuesday, pointing out it was not the question of war or some military campaign. The plans were to execute a minor special operation and get back South Ossetia’s capital Tskhinvali without great casualties.

The operation was slated for the spring of 2006, the former defense minister specified. It was the maximum date agreed on with the president, Okruashvili said.

According to Okruashvili, he was appointed defense minister in December 2005 to create armed power of the county at the earliest possible date, quickly and efficiently.

His resignation, Okruashvili went on, was caused by Saakashvili’s failure to meet hopes of the Georgians concerning restoring of territorial integrity of the country.
