Changes in Russia’s Govt Split Ranks of West Media
The upheaval in Russia’s cabinet has split ranks of the most authoritative news media of the West. President Vladimir Putin announced the changes September 24.
According to The Financial Times and Reuters, the fact that Finance Minister Alexey Kudrin was promoted to Vice Premier in Zubkov’s cabinet signals that the standing of government’s reformers has strengthened.
Appointment of Kudrin’s deputy Tatiana Golikova to take over Health and Social Development Ministry after Mikhail Zurabov could be viewed as another proof of the above assumption.
The Financial Times analysts are also positive about resignation of Economic Development Minister German Gref and promotion of his deputy Elvira Nabiullina to his office.
But The Daily Telegraph isn't very optimistic. According to this edition, Gref’s ouster means the cabinet has been purged of the liberal reformers. Today’s strength of the government in Russia shows the rise of the loyalists, who will be very enthusiastic about Putin’s decision to abandon the market reforms.
