Russia Goes After Berezovsky In Absentia
The Moscow City Court sustained Monday the absentee arrest of Boris Berezovsky, who is charged with the fraud with credits from SBS-Agro bank, sources with the court said. By this award, the court overruled the appeal of Berezovsky’s lawyers, seeking a new trial for the case.
It is the sixth attempt of the Prosecutor General Office to arrest Boris Berezovsky in absentia, lawyer of the Russian tycoon Valery Borovkov told the court September 24, 2007, pointing out that the only evidence against Berezovsky is the respective resolution of detectives from the Prosecutor General Office.

But the court ignored all arguments of defense and ruled in favor of Basmanny Court’s award of August 27, 2007.

The charges against Berezovsky specify fraud with the credits from SBS-Agro bank, which amount was over $13 million. According to detectives, the oligarch set up a criminal group for that purpose in 1997. The funds were aimed at buying real estate in the Mediterranean. A separate criminal case against the exiled tycoon was opened July 27, 2007.

In addition, the prosecutors addressed the court for the sanction to sequester Berezovsky’s estate in France. Basmanny Court upheld the petition on July 30, 2007.

Nowadays, Berezovsky is the resident of Britain, where he enjoys political asylum. Russia has repeatedly sought his extradition, to no avail though.
