US Prefers Czech Radar to Gabala Station
Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov believes that the U.S. prefers building a radar in the Czech Republic to using the Gabala radar station in Azerbaijan because it will allow to scan the Russian territory.
“The U.S. colleagues say that Gabala cannot substitute a radar in the Czech Republic. I understand them absolutely well: Gabala cannot scan Russia’s territory from western borders to the Ural mountains,” said Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, during the G8 summit in Germany in summer 2007, offered to the U.S. to jointly use the Gabala radar station in Azerbaijan as an alternative to U.S. plans to deploy missile defense elements in Poland and the Czech Republic.
Besides, Lavrov underlined that Russia sees threat in the plans for deploying the elements of US missile defense system in Eastern Europe. “We see a threat, and we are preparing a response to that threat. It will definitely incite U.S. scientists and military industry to create more modern weapons. Our guys won’t sit twiddling their thumbs either,” said Lavrov.
