RF Natural Recourse Ministry Claims Arctic Shelf Is Russian
The Lomonosov and Mendeleev Ridges in the Arctic Ocean continue the shelf of Russia, the RF Natural Resource Ministry announced with reference to geologists.
The conclusion that the Arctic shelf is the soil of Russia was reached based on two expeditions held at Academician Fedorov vessel.

In the course of the second expedition that was backed up by Rossia icebreaker, the researchers managed to take samples of earth and even staked a symbolic claim by planting a flag on the seabed below the North Pole.

The RF Natural Resource Ministry announced they have received preliminary data and proceed with the work to substantiate external border of Russia in the Arctic Ocean. The work will be completed in December 2007 and the documents will be forwarded to the UN Commission in the next move.

In the wake of Russia’s activity in Arctic, some other Arctic states rushed to stake their own claims before the deadline of May 2009. Under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Arctic nations – Denmark, Canada, the United States, Norway and Russia – have 10 years after ratification to prove claims to the Arctic region, which is believed to have 25 percent of the world’s undiscovered resources of oil and gas and which becomes more and more attractive along with the melting ice.
