St. Petersburg Governor Denies Transfer to RF Cabinet
St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matvienko has denied rumors about transferring to the new government of Russia headed by president’s nominee Viktor Zubkov.
Matvienko said none in St. Petersburg government has been offered an office in federal cabinet. “Behind my back, no one is able to go anywhere. It is an element of our commitments to each other,” the governor announced when commenting about the alleged transfer of top-ranked bureaucrats from Smolny to the Kremlin.

Asked to evaluate Zubkov as the future premier, Matvienko said he is “a man of impeccable reputation” and “is well-aware of the situation in economy and financial field.” “He knows a lot about overseas accounts,” the governor specified. “It’s important, as we have to clean our economy.”

September 12 resignation of Fradkov’s cabinet triggered all kinds of suppositions. St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matvienko was one of the persons expected to take over the cabinet. But Putin preferred obscure chief of Federal Financial Monitoring Service, Viktor Zubkov.
