Barroso to Close Europe’s Energy Market for Aliens
European Commission will propose procedures that would bar foreign investors from buying energy assets in Europe, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso made clear, giving security concerns as top reason.
According to Barroso, the procedures will be applied if it is determined that the reason of purchase hasn’t been of the business nature. The purpose to attain is not to close Europe but rather to open other markets.

Barroso said he discussed proposals with President Vladimir Putin. The actions aren’t targeted at the state-run energy companies of Russia, the official specified, pointing out that restrictions won’t be discriminating, as they will be equally in force for the EU companies and for companies of other states.

On September 19, European Commission is expected to present for elaboration the drafts restricting strategic investments of foreign companies in the EU economy. Some limits may affect projects of Russia’s gas monopoly Gazprom.
