Russia Outpaced U.S. in Sustainability
Russia has been scored the sixth in the index of sustainability of fiscal and financial development compiled by German Allianz Insurance and Dresdner Bank. It outpaced the Untied States, Britain and Germany, which were placed the 17th, seventh and ninth respectively, The Financial Times reported calling the result rather unexpected.
The 18-state study of Allianz Insurance and Dresdner Bank named Sweden as leading performer in terms of sustainability, while Austria and emerging Brazil were called the second and the third.
The sustainability index is a composite of five parameters. Although Russia is the best in three indicators, public debt, current account and net borrowing balances, it is at the very bottom judging by carbon dioxide emissions and high energy use per unit of GDP.
Some other emerging economies, China (13th) and India (16th), for instance, are more sustainable than the United States.
Finance Minister Alexey Kudrin vowed in 2006 that Russia has all chances to establish economy in ten years equal in power to the United States, Germany or France.
