Military Band Festival on Red Square
The Kremlin Reveille festival opens today with the participation of 16 military bands from Russia and five countries of the former British Empire, including the famous Scottish guard The Highlanders, and other countries. Three hundred bagpipers will be heard simultaneously on Red Square during the festival.
In spite of the nod to the Scots, the festival marks the return of an old Russian tradition. As festival director Vitaly Mironov said, “An army can not only fight, it can dance and sing.” There is no official competition at the festival, but a spirit of showmanship will predominate. The participating bands perform together for the finale. They will play a popular Russian military melody from the Second World War.

Other bands and orchestras will include those of the Russian Presidential Regiment and Russian Defense Ministry, the Danish Royal Honor Guard, Australian Pipes and Drums and others.
