U.S. Handed Over K-129 Files to Russia
Representatives of the United States handed over to the Pacific Ocean Military and Historic Museum of Russia the documents shedding light on the search and partial salvage of Soviet K-129 submarine that sank in 1968, the RF Defense Ministry reported via its website.
The Pacific Ocean Military and Historic Museum received documents and video-records that had had the classification label. Amid them is the video showing burial of the crew and the files of Glomar Explorer’s expedition that partially salvaged the submarine.
Diesel K-129 was a Project 629 strategic ballistic missile submarine. It went missing March 8, 1968 to be found later on by the American intelligence not far from the Hawaiian Islands. The submarine was partially salvaged during the secret operation led by CIA.
K-129 broke into two during the lift, but the Americans managed to rescue some compartments, including the missile one. They also found bodies of six submariners.
