Russia’s Reactors to Work on Australian Uranium
World leader in uranium reserves, Australia will be supplying uranium to Russia for processing and using in Russia’s nuclear reactors, RIA Novosti reported.
The respective intergovernmental agreement was concluded on Friday in Sydney during the tour of Vladimir Putin to Australia. The document that spells out cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy was inked by Russia’s Federal Atomic Energy Chief Sergey Kirienko and Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs Alexander Downer.

The previous agreement that was made in 1990 provided for the uranium processing only for some third states.

Using Australian uranium for military purposes is completely out of the question, Vladimir Putin announced after the meeting with Australia's Prime Minister John Howard. Any uranium that is sold to Russia, Mr Howard emphasized, will be delivered under the special guarantees.

“Those speaking about Russia’s possible use of Australian uranium for military purposes either don’t understand what it is all about or intentionally inject this thesis to prevent cooperation,” Putin pointed out.
