State Duma Ratifies Border Treaty with Latvia
Russia’s parliament, the State Duma, has ratified the border treaty with Latvia. Prime ministers of the countries inked the document in Moscow March 27, 2007.
As many as 350 lawmakers backed up the treaty that lost a portion specifying the possible territorial claims of Latvia to Russia. But 57 deputies voted against it.

The treaty spells out the route of Russia-Latvian state border that actually copies today’s passage. Some adjustments have been made in view of the business and economic activities of the population, current plans of the land use and the lay-of-the-land.

Latvia had always refused to seal a border treaty with Russia, pressing for the reference to the Riga Peace Treaty of 1921, which, Russia says, lost validity after 1940. Under the treaty of 1921, the Pytalovo district was a portion of Latvia but the soil is a part of Russia’s Pskov region now.

The RF Foreign Ministry welcomed ratification and vowed to proceed with defending the rights of compatriots living in Latvia.
