Open-Air Markets Become Rarer
The number of open-air retail markets in the Russian Federation will be reduced by 30-35 percent by the end of the year, compared with its beginning. Material prepared by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade for the government commission on regulating foreign labor migration indicates that about 4000 markets will be left by yearend. That material also indicates that more than half the markets in Russia had been registered by August 1, with 3591 management companies receiving permission to operate markets.
Economics Ministry data show that enforcement of new legislation on markets has been most effective in the Northwestern Federal District, where 81.3 percent of markets have undergone new registration. In Vladimir Region, the number of markets has been reduced by 90 percent. In Perm Territory and the Chechen Republic, no markets have been registered due to delays in the passage of regional legislation.

The Economics Ministry noted that markets that do not have permission to operate can be converted into shopping centers, with the necessary construction, or into seasonal markets. Otherwise they will be closed. The ministry also noted that 625 new markets are to open in the country between 2008 and 2015.
