Qabala Discussions to Clarify Missile Defense Problems
Russia, the United States and Azerbaijan will meet in Baku September 15 to deliberate on the joint use of Qabala radar, said Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Naryshkin, who is currently on official visit in Azerbaijan.
According to Naryshkin, the experts of three states, Azerbaijan, Russia and the United States, will set to the joint work on September 15. Naryshkin said the Qabala issue was raised Friday during the talks with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliev. “This topic was briefly discussed with president,” Naryshkin specified.
The September discussion, Naryshkin went on, will clarify the situation around the U.S. plans to station missile defense components in Eastern Europe and related to using the Qabala radar.
The United States intends to station a radar in the Czech Republic and interceptors in Poland attributing this move to the potential threat of some rogue states, mostly Iran. Russia, however, sees it as an unjustified provocation and suggests using the Qabala radar instead of deploying new facilities in Eastern Europe.
