Neither the 51st U.S. State Nor a Branch of Russia
Austria is neither the 51st U.S. state nor a branch of Russia, Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik announced after the U.S. response to the missile shield comments of Austrian Defense Minister Norbert Darabos, AP reported.
Last week, Austrian Defense Minister Norbert Darabos called a provocation the U.S. plans to station a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe and urged Washington to reach some compromise with Moscow.

”I regard it as a provocation,” the minister announced blaming on Washington the attempts to revive debates of the time of the Cold War.

Washington rebuffed by calling Darabos’ statement reflecting the world view of the Cold War time.

Plassnik, however, played down Darabos rhetoric, specifying that Russia’s media took his words with excessive enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, the attitude in the countries that are expected to host the U.S. defense facilities is rather ambiguous. According to the polls, the better part in the Czech Republic and even in Poland oppose hosting the U.S. radar and interceptors, while the authorities of those states stand ready to welcome the facilities.
