U.S. Research Icebreaker Runs to the Arctic
The United States is sending the Coast Guard icebreaker to the Arctic to study the bed of Chukotka ridge. The underwater plateau extends from the northern end of Alaska to roughly 805 kilometers.
The purpose of this four-day expedition is easy to foresee – plotting on the map some corrections and determining whether the portion of explored territory belongs to the United States.
At the same time, the U.S. scientists deny that the expedition could be viewed as response to the recent effort of Russia that would be remembered for planting the national flag in the bed of the Arctic Ocean and by the record dives of two mini-subs.
The expedition could be neither regarded as something inspired by Canada’s intention to construct a port in that northern region. It had been planned during three years and is a part of the long-term program, said scientists of New Hampshire University that participate in the exhibition.
The Chukotka ridge is the bottom area in the Arctic Ocean extending to the north of the Chukchee Sea. In terms of geography, it could be related both to Eurasia and North America.
