Georgia Calls for UN Council Meeting on Alleged Russian Strike
Georgia’s Foreign Minister has called for an UN Security Council emergency meeting to discuss a recent alleged bombing of a Georgian village by a Russian aircraft, the Novosti Gruzia news agency said Wednesday.
Georgian Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili said that the country’s envoy to the UN Irakly Alasaniya had been instructed to prepare papers for the session. The Georgian minister added that Tbilisi is also going to discuss an incident when Russia allegedly bombed the eastern part of the Kodori Gorge in March.

Georgian officials say they have infallible evidence that aircrafts which dropped a missile on the village of Tsitelubani earlier this week came from the Russian territory. Data from aviation radars and the Georgian defense ministry reports clearly prove this, according to Mr. Bezhuashvili.

Georgia earlier said that its airspace was assaulted by two Su-24 bombers. Georgian experts identified an unexploded missile which was found outside the village as a Russian-made Raduga Kh-58 anti-radar guided missile. Tbilisi underscores that the Georgian army is not equipped with either of the aircrafts or missiles.

Moscow denied the accusations. The Russian Air Force command said that its military jets have no involvement in a strike on the village. The Russian Foreign Ministry added that it is “ready for cooperation” to investigate the attack.

The probe into the March missile strike in the Kodori Gorge has been on for several months with plenty of scandals and mutual accusations.

Georgian authorities earlier said that the gorge’s eastern part came under fire by Russian-made missiles from the breakaway republic of Abkhazia. Russia’s Foreign Ministry reacted saying that the incident exacerbated the situation in Abkhazia, which plays into Tbilisi’s hands. Sukhumi then accused Tbilisi of provocation. Meanwhile, the UN mission in Georgia which was probing into the attack has failed to come up with solid conclusions and name the culprit.
