Safety of Sochi Olympics Is New Concern of Prosecutors
An office of prosecutors could be set up in Sochi when preparing the city to host 2014 Olympic Games. According to sources with PR department of RF Prosecutor General Office, this option is being considered now.
A special team of Russia’s Prosecutor General Office has held today the first meeting devoted to ensuring the state and public security when preparing and holding the Sochi 2014 Olympics and Paralympics. The chief of this taskforce is Alexander Buksman, first deputy of Russia’s prosecutor general, while its members are deputy chiefs and officials from Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Federal Guards Service, Interior Ministry, Federal Security Service (Russia’s abbreviation is FSB), Federal Migration Service and Federal Service for Drug Trafficking.
In addition to this taskforce, a special team of prosecutors will emerge directly in the Krasnodar region (of which Sochi is an integral part). This group will be led by the regional prosecutor general and unite efforts of Krasnodar prosecutors and territorial bodies of law enforcement.
But ensuring safety and preventing any extremism won’t be the sole tasks of the prosecutors related to 2014 Olympics. They are also expected to supervise spending of funds appropriated for constructing Olympic facilities in Sochi.
