Russia Won’t Swap South Ossetia for Inguri Power Plant
Russia holds no talks with Georgia to yield South Ossetia for some economic concessions, RF Foreign Ministry rebuffed reports of some media about alleged readiness of Moscow to swap South Ossetia for Inguri Hydropower Plant.
”During the talks with Georgia, we have never considered potential compromise in light of any exchanges under the principal matters,” the RF Foreign Ministry announced, emphasizing that the conflicts could be resolved only based on negotiations acceptable for all parties involved.
Russia’s diplomats blamed the misleading information on reporters, saying they distorted the data when hunting for sensation. “There was an ordered attempt not only to turn everything upside down but also to force a wedge between Russia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia,” the diplomats said.
The problem of South Ossetia has been frequently raised during the talks of Moscow and Tbilisi. Russia stands for the territorial integrity of Georgia, RF President Vladimir Putin reiterated when he last met with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. Nevertheless, Georgian authorities still claim that the Kremlin encourages separatist feelings of Tskhinvali and financially backs up unrecognized President Eduard Kokoity.
As to Inguri Hydropower Plant, it is located in the conflict area of Georgia and Abkhazia, and both of them consume power energy generated by it.
