Sharapova Returns Triumphantly
After a month-break because of the shoulder injury, defending champion Maria Sharapova of Russia crushed Thai Tamarine Tanasugarn (6-1 6-3) in the second round of Acura Classic in San Diego.
Sharapova last played July 4, when she yielded to Venus Williams at 1/8 in Wimbledon.

“The shoulder’s still not perfect, but right now I know it’s not going to get any worse,” Sharapova said after the victory as quoted by bbc.co. World number two, who has won no tournaments this year, said she made some errors but she knows she can improve.

Sharapova will face Tatiana Golovin of France in the third round. Russia’s Anna Chakvetadze, Dinara Safina, Marina Kirilenko and Elena Dementieva advanced to the round three as well.

Venus Williams also won in San Diego, having overwhelmed Virginie Razzano of France 6-2 6-4. Williams has three Acura Classic titles and will play sixth seed Daniela Hantuchova in the next effort.
