Fradkov Prompts Moscow Bureaucrats to Go to the Far East
Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov has called on the bureaucrats of Moscow and St. Petersburg to go to the Far East for a few years and bring momentum to the region’s development.
Quite a lot has been done to improve living conditions in the Far East, Russia’s PM Mikhail Fradkov said when opening today’s meeting of cabinet dedicated to the target program of region’s social development till 2013. “But something else should be done in addition, it’s high time [to revive] Komsomol construction, attract the youth, construction teams. Excuse me for the out-of-date terminology,” the prime minister said.

”The chiefs, who are currently in Moscow and St. Petersburg, should be, perhaps, requested to go and lead the regions for a few years to personally manifest the country’s interest in the Far East’s development.” The bureaucrats should not only visit the Far East and Transbaikalia as tourists, “but also work for the benefit of the country,” the prime minister emphasized.

Far East’s advance is one of the tasks of top priority that President Vladimir Putin set to the government. Some time earlier, Finance Minister Alexey Kudrin vowed to appropriate 427 billion rubles to elaborate the program of social and economic development of the Far East and Transbaikalia. The better part of money will go to give a boost to the region’s infrastructure.

The plans are, the bureaucrats say, to annually construct under the federal target program the automobile roads of 6,600 kilometers, railway roads of 112 kilometers, lay power lines of 5,000 kilometers. Moreover, new fields of gas yielding 130 million cu meters a year will be put into operation. The money will also go to rebuild airports, sea ports and public health facilities.
