Russia Urges to Consolidate All Efforts to Fight Climate Change
Russia’s envoy to U.N. Vitaly Churkin has urged to consolidate all efforts but avoid apocalyptic feelings when elaborating long-term global strategy for climate, ITAR-TASS reported.
Russia is one of the active participants of global climate process, consistently advocating consolidation of all efforts based on the complex scientific research, Russia’s envoy to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said during the climate changes discussions held by the U.N. General Assembly. At the same time, Churkin urged to avoid apocalyptic feelings when elaborating a long-term climate strategy.

Exactly Russia’s decision to ratify the Kyoto Protocol put this document into effect, Churkin reminded, adding that Russia will continue executing quantitative commitments during the term of Kyoto Protocol till 2012. Russia has everything needed for this purpose, including the respective laws, Churkin specified.

Churkin said that overall emissions of greenhouse gases in Russia have shed nearly 30 percent since 1990, having materially helped bring down the global anthropogenic burden on planet’s climate. It has also compensated the growth in greenhouse emissions in developed states over the period, the envoy pointed out.

According to Churkin, implementation of climate projects in developing nations and in the countries with transition economies will ensure additional source of money to tackle the problem of stable development and to fight poverty.
