Arctic 2007 Expedition Reaches North Pole
The Russian polar expedition Arctic 2007, which will determine the borders of the Arctic shelf of Russia, reached the North Pole on Wednesday evening, the press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute reported. The nuclear-powered ship Rossiya cut a path through the ice for the scientific ship Akademik Fedorov.
On Thursday morning, two deepwater manned Mir craft will be launched to the floor of the northern ice ocean, a depth of 4000 m. Immersion at the exact point of the North Pole will take place for the first time ever. Artur Chilingarov, president of the Association of Polar Explorers and Hero of the Soviet Union, will be on one of the craft.

Forecasters predict good weather conditions in the area of the launch of the Mir – a light wind and 20-km. visibility.
