U.S. Still Hasn't Convinced Russia
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced on Wednesday that the United States MB>has not convinced Russia of the necessity of its placement of missile defense elements in Poland and the Czech Republic. “We did not hear convincing facts that would refute our evaluations,” the minister told journalists in Manila, where he is taking part in the Association of Southeastern Asian States.
Lavrov said that the two sides agreed to prepare extensively for the second round of talks, which will most likely take place in Moscow in September. At the beginning of October, negotiations will be held between the top diplomats and military leaders of the two countries.
The Russian delegation in Washington for talks on July 30 and 31 was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Kislyak. “The delegation that arrived in the U.S. had developed ideas on paper. They were discussed and taken for additional study,” Lavrov said. “We confirmed that, before doing anything, the character of the threat has to be analyzed jointly.”
