Redstone Arsenal’s Facility Launched 1st Day of U.S.-Russia Talks
Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency (MDA) inaugurated Monday the $44.4-million facility at Redstone Arsenal military base located close to Huntsville, Alabama.
MDA Director Lt. Gen. Henry Obering III attended the inauguration along with senators, congressmen and Huntsville mayor.
The facility will employ roughly a thousand military and civil MDA workers. But Redstone Arsenal is expected to accommodate 5,500 MDA workers by 2011. MDA currently employs some 8,500.
This launch is the first major milestone in moving air defense facilities of MDA to Redstone Arsenal, Obering specified during inauguration.
Development and deployment of air defense weapons to protect the United States and its allies in Europe and Asia against some rogue states are the key missions of MDA, and the timing of today’s inauguration at Redstone Arsenal is significant. The U.S.-Russia’s consultations on air defense have begun the same day not in Redstone Arsenal though but in the State Department in Washington.
