Putin to Canvass Mid East Problems with Abbas
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will meet in the Kremlin today the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) President Mahmoud Abbas, who arrived in Moscow for three days on July 29, 2007. Putin and Abbas are expected to focus on methods to sort out the Middle East problems.
Mahmoud Abbas and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a meeting yesterday. “We firmly support you as the lawful leader of all Palestinians,” Lavrov said, emphasizing his hope that the conversation of Putin and Abbas will help outline definite ways of Russia’s cooperation with Palestine both in bilateral relations and in tackling internal conflicts in that country.

The equally courteous Abbas announced he looks forward to talking to Putin and intends to canvass issues and ways that would enable Palestine to break internal and political deadlock.

On July 26, Lavrov had a telephone conversation with Hamas senior chief Khaled Mashaal and confirmed the need of reviving unity of the Palestinians under control of the PNA leader. According to Mashaal, nothing hinders cooperation of Fatah and Hamas to create the Palestinian state. Hamas is all for unity of Palestinian nation under the aegis of the PNA leader, Mashaal assured.
