First Round of Russia’s-U.S. Air Defense Consultations Begins in Washington
Russia and the United States will hold at least two or three rounds of missile defense consultations before elaborating the report for presidents in October, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at the government’s meeting. The first round begins in Washington today, the minister specified.
“The plans are to hold at least two or three such contacts before presenting results of consultations to the meeting of defense and foreign ministers of both countries,” Lavrov said.
”This get-together is slated for early October. Then, the report to presidents of both countries will be elaborated,” the minister pointed out.
Russia’s delegation will be governed by the guidelines based on initiatives put forward by president in Kennebunkport.
”The guidelines specify and give details of those proposals. They provide for passing drafts of respective documents to the U.S. party,” Lavrov pointed out.
Today’s intention of the United States is to station a radar in the Czech Republic and interceptors in Poland. According to Washington, the planned missile defense installations are meant to counter a potential threat from Iran. Moscow, however, has repeatedly rejected the U.S. assurances, viewing deployment as potential hazard to it.
