Russia Imposes Moratorium on CFE Treaty, Not Pulls Out Of It
Russia fulfills all commitments under the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE Treaty) and has no intention to pull out of it. It only imposes moratorium on its implementation, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Kislyak said.
”We are acting strictly under the terms of the treaty. The moratorium will come into force in 150 days after respective notification by Russia, i.e. in the middle of this December. Russia is completely within the framework of the treaty today, executing its all commitments,” Kislyak announced after meeting chiefs of Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry, News of Azerbaijan reported.

”The problem is that the treaty was adapted to new conditions and it hasn’t taken effect yet. As of today, only Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus have ratified it. Even the Ukrainian parliament hasn’t done it. So claiming that Russia has withdrawn from the treaty wouldn’t be correct. To the contrary, we are interested that it would be adapted to today’s reality and act equally for all in this area,” the diplomat explained.
