Academician Fedorov Continues North Pole Effort
The failure of engine’s propeller screw that forced Academician Fedorov motor ship to drift in the Barents Sea has been successfully repaired and the vessel is again en route to the North Pole, ITAR-TASS reported with reference to Murmansk Port.
The crew independently repaired the fault even before Rossia atomic icebreaker managed to reach the vessel. Rossia that is to ensure the work of the exhibition in the Arctic ice had been called to help once the defect was discovered.
Now both vessels are running together, heading to Franz Josef Land, where they will stop to take a training dip of 1.5 kilometers in Mir bathyscaphes.
The Arctic expedition of Russia’s scientists started on Tuesday, July 24, 2007. It is expected to take two weeks and become the biggest undertaking in all history of North Pole’s exploration. Its members will raise the flag of Russia deep in the Arctic Ocean and collect all data available about the length of Russia’ continental shelf. The information will be also of utmost importance to study the global changes of climate.
In late July, the bathyscaphes (Mir-1 and Mir-2) will reach the Arctic Ocean’s bottom near the Franz Josef Land, diving as deep as 4,200 meters; the flag of Russia will be raised exactly at this depth. The most difficult operation will be hoisting bathyscaphs back through the ice-hole, the scientists forecast.
