U.S. Citizen Goes to Law Against Fidel Castro
Sherry Sullivan of the United States has filed a lawsuit against Cuban leader Fidel Castro, blaming on him the death of her father, Geoffrey Francis Sullivan. Geoffrey Sullivan was a pilot, who disappeared without a trace during the flight over Cuba in 1963.
According to Ms Sullivan, her father was shot down over Cuba, captured and spent much time in prison, where he died. In addition to Fidel Castro, another defendant is his brother Raul.
Fidel Castro and co-defendants are liable under the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act that the Congress passed in 1996. Pursuant to that act, the U.S. citizens may sue Cuban authorities for the wrongful deaths in the U.S. courts, which have passed awards for quite a number of similar claims in the recent years. The damages are paid to families of the victims from Cuban assets frozen in the United States.
Most often, the suits against Castro and his regime are filed by Cuban immigrants seeking to nail the leader for crimes against humanity, tortures and terrorism.
