Moscow Invited to Determine South Ossetia’s Status
The state commission for determining status of former South Ossetian Autonomous District in Georgia held the first meeting in Tbilisi on July 24. It was chaired by Georgian PM Zurab Nogaideli, News Georgia reported.
The decision of the first get-together of top-ranked officials of Georgia and North Ossetia was to attract masterminds of Russia and the EU envoys. Nogaideli, for instance, committed Georgian Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili to send invitations to Moscow and Brussels.
Ivlian Khaindrava, who represented the opposition Republican Party of Georgia during the commission’s sitting, suggested granting the cultural autonomy status to South Ossetia. South Ossetia should have cultural autonomy with certain elements of political autonomy, Khaindrava said, specifying that his party submitted the package of respective proposals to the state commission two years ago and that package could be viewed the basic one for the future work of the body.
Next time, the commission will meet on Saturday, July 28, in Kurta village of Georgia.
