Europe to Fear Russia More Than Bin Laden
The relations between the West and Russia have aggravated to such extent that the shift to another cold war could happen, U.S. renowned historian and political analyst Richard Pipes forecasted.
For Europe, Russia could be even more dangerous than the threat of Islam, more hazardous than bin Laden, Pipes told Italian Corriere della Sera Thursday.
According to Pipes, Russia takes every effort to emerge as a superpower anew and pressurize European and even global economy.
Pipes said that, in Russia, he is always impressed by the country’s hostility towards the West. Same as with the USSR, the detention tactics should be elaborated for Russia, particularly in the field of economy. For this purpose, oil companies are to stop making contracts with Russia, while the banks should cut off investments.
Predictably, Pipes strongly advocates positioning missile defense shield in Poland and Czechia, reasoning that otherwise, the Russians would continue regarding the former socialist states within the scope of their influence.
Richard Pipes (1923) is an American scholar of Poland’s origin, who specializes in Soviet and Russian history. In the 1970s, Pipes was the fiercest critic of détente, claiming it was "inspired by intellectual indolence and based on ignorance of one's antagonist and therefore inherently inept.” Pipes has written many books and is a member of several editorial boards.
