Russia to Appropriate Billion Rubles for HIV Vaccine
Russia’s government will appropriate over 1 billion rubles to four research institutes of the country for HIV vaccine development, Interfax reported.
As much as 1 billion rubles will be appropriated from the federal budget to develop HIV vaccine, said Gennady Onishchenko, who is Russia’s chief medical officer and head of Federal Service for Consumer Rights Supervision, Rospotrebnadzor. The funds will be allocated for three years and go to four research institutes, including Vektor Institute (Novosibirsk) and Immunology Institute (Moscow).
Onishchenko said that 388,871 HIV cases have been recorded since the first case was registered in Russia [1987]. The HIV-infected mothers have given birth to 1,280 babies. But most of them are healthy, as many mothers got special treatment in time of delivery, the medical officer assured.
When it comes to HIV expansion in Russia, the most alarming situation is in the Irkutsk region (21,000 cases), Samara region (27,000) as well as in Orenburg, Leningrad, Sverdlov, Tyumen, Chelyabinsk, Moscow regions, St. Petersburg and Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District.
According to Onishchenko, roughly 22 million Russians will undergo HIV tests this year and the treatment will cover about 30,000.
