Merkel Finds Russia’s Missile Defense Proposals Interesting
Russia has made interesting proposals on missile defense, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said during the news conference Wednesday.
Merkel emphasized that thanks to Russia the question is not whether to have anything [in missile defense field] but rather how to jointly do it. Russia has come up with very interesting offers related, for instance, to joint info centers in Moscow and Brussels and we have the whole package for discussing how to do it, the chancellor made clear.

So, according to Merkel, the most vital result of Putin’s proposals is the end of discussion about the need of missile defense system in general.

Although proposals of the United States are different, Merkel said, they also specify existence of threats that call for response. According to Merkel, Europe should thoroughly think whether it needs the complete coverage. In South Europe, there are areas that are yet uncovered and this topic should be canvassed in NATO. Merkel said she had been always advocating the NATO-Russia Council as the venue for such talks.

When asked whether the place of creating the missile defense shield for Europe is of no particular relevance to her, Merkel said she isn’t against President Putin and isn’t against his idea. It appears the greater cooperation is of vital importance for German chancellor.
