The Expelled Diplomats Were Spies, The Guardian Said
The four diplomats of Russia that are being expelled from Britain in response to Moscow’s denial to extradite Andrey Lugovoy are officers of FSB, the agency that succeeded KGB, The Guardian made clear.
The UK is expelling four Russian diplomats in response to Moscow's denial to hand over Andrey Lugovy, the prime suspect in polonium murder of Alexander Litvinenko, once officer of FSB and then a resident of Britain.
In this respect, the comments of The Guardian are very interesting. Emphasizing that expelling diplomats was the common practice in time of the Cold War, when Russia and Britain were spying on each other, The Guardian claims that the countries proceed with spying activities.
Same as during the Cold War, roughly 30 intelligence officers of Russia are based in London, The Guardian asserts. The expelled four diplomats are amid those who are thought to be spies.
In view of the above, The Guardian concludes that Britain’s prosecutors actually suspect exactly secret services of Russia in Litvinenko’s killing. The names of expelled diplomats haven’t been given so far. According to The Times, all of them are top-ranked officials with solid ties with security services.
