Velvet Season in Russia to Start in Mid-September
A spell of mild weather is to set in across the European part of Russia in the second half of September, the director of the country’s leading meteorological research center told reporters on Friday.
“The ‘velvet’ season is a usual phenomenon in southern Russia where quite hot weather will persist in the coming months,” Roman Vilfand, director of the Federal Meteorological Center, said.

Water temperatures in southern Russia are expected to exceed the year’s averages. A hike in temperatures is expected in the next few days, the meteorologist said.

Mr. Vilfand noted that August is traditionally the warmest month for all resort towns. The same will be true for this year as well.

“I would like to invite everyone who enjoys hot weather to the south of our country,” the Federal Meteorological Center chief said.

Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi was selected last week to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.
