Olympic Money Must Remain Safe – Putin
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin warned on Monday against possible embezzlement of money allocated for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
“We must not allow money to be spent irrationally,” the Russian president told the government on Monday. “We must not allow embezzlement of state funds.”
Vladimir Putin earlier signed a decree to launch preparations for the 2014 Winter Olympics. He mentioned Monday a clause in the decree that ensures security for athletes and Olympic guests. “I have asked the Prosecutor General’s Office to set up a working group for ensuring security and overseeing facilities construction,” the Russian president said.
Out of 12 billion rubles at the disposal for the Olympics, 5 billion rubles came from private investments. The Russian leader said surplus funds are to be used for the development of infrastructure in southern Russia – building roads, bridges, communications and electricity systems. The remaining money will be spent on the construction of Olympic facilities and preparation of Russian Olympic teams for both winter and summer games.
