Russia to Respond to US Missile Shield in Europe – Deputy PM
Russia has an adequate response to the deployment of U.S. anti-missile defense facilities in Poland and the Czech Republic, First Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov told reporters on Wednesday.
Moscow will take steps to ensure its security if Washington turns down its offer of cooperation on missile defense, Sergey Ivanov told the press on Wednesday. “We are already taking these measures. An asymmetrical and effective response has been found,” the deputy prime minister said without specifying what that response involves.

Sergey Ivanov said that if Russia’s proposals are not accepted, Moscow will “continue persistently and patiently explain its position on this issue” to the United States. Russia will present its arguments and hope to hear counterarguments, not “mere statements,” he noted.

The first deputy prime minister, who is in overall charge of Russia’s defense sector, added that the decision will be based on expert opinions, including views of the military.

Meeting with U.S. President George Bush this week, Vladimir Putin proposed an expanded plan for missile defense cooperation that would involve Russia and NATO sharing data on missile launches from “rogue states”.
