Russia Honors Memory of Fallen Heroes Today
June 22 is the Memorial Day in Russia. The nation today honors heroes fallen in the WW2. Russia and other CIS members will witness mourning ceremonies and in many towns and cities, the remains of soldiers will be reburied and memorial service held.
Without declaring war, Germany attacked the Soviet Union at 4:00 a.m. on June 22, 1941 to extend the offensive to Russia and unleash the war that is called the Great Patriotic here.
That war ended in 1945, but it sill remains the most murderous in the whole history of humanity. The USSR alone lost at least 26.6 million by official data, while nearly 34.5 million troops of the Soviet Union took part in the battle operations.
According to some estimates, the Soviet death toll reached 29.6 million.
As the memorable day, the beginning of the Great Patriot War has been marked since 1992. The flags will be lowered in Russia today and all entertaining actions and programs have been put off.
