Russia to Trim Import Duties on Cell Phone Spares, Primary Aluminum
The government’s commission on foreign trade protection will focus next week on reducing the import duties on spares for cell phones, digital cameras, primary aluminum and certain fur clothes, said Galina Balandina from Russia’s Economic Development and Trade Ministry, Interfax reported.
The plans are to abolish the primary aluminum duty but the duties on scrap will survive, Balandina pointed out. It is also planned to cancel the digital camera duties.

The issue of reducing duties on cell phone spares and, perhaps, on the cell phones themselves, will be raised as well, the official said. To be more precise, the duties on cell phone spares could be trimmed from today’s 5 percent to 20 percent to 0.5 percent.

When it comes to the primary aluminum duties, the root cause is consolidation of RUSAL and SUAL into United RUSAL, which gave rise to monopolization fears. The proposal is to abolish the duty to boost competition, Balandina made clear.
