Venezuela Decides Whether to Buy Russia’s Submarines
Venezuela is studying chances of buying up to five submarines in Russia to emerge as top naval force in the region, the AP reported with reference to Hugo Chavez military advisor Gen. Alberto Muller.
Gen. Muller came up with this statement in response to the report in some Russian newspaper that Chavez intends to seal a submarines contract when visiting Moscow June 29.

”Venezuela is interested in examining within a strategic context the possibility that these submarines fit our defense plans,” Muller said as quoted by the AP. The deal will transform Venezuela into a top naval force and strengthening navy is today’s top priority of the country, Muller pointed out.

Venezuela and Russia have entered into a few vital agreements already, including the $1-billion contract for Russia’s Su-30 planes and combat helicopters. Venezuela found a true strategic ally in Russia, President Hugo Chavez announced after the deal.

Moreover, Venezuela and Russia are deliberating on two more contracts. One of the projects provides for constructing a pipe works in Venezuela, which will operate on the country’s steel but under Russia’s technology. The second contract is for building an aluminum mill in that country of Latin America.
