Zyuganov Announces His Presidential Bid
Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov is ready to run for president in 2008. “The party’s will is an order for the leader,” Mr. Zyuganov said in a telephone interview with the Interfax news agency on Monday.
Gennady Zyuganov, who is now meeting grassroots Communist organizations across Northern Caucasus, has offered his bid for that Russian presidency in the city of Cherkessk. Mr. Zyuganov said party units in southern Russia had nominated him.
Similar party sessions are to be held in Siberia, the Urals region and the Far East to confirm his nomination, the Communist party leader told Interfax. The final decision to endorse his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election is to be taken at a Communist Party session in mid-September, Mr. Zyuganov said.

The Communist leader also weighted in on the discussion of possible successors to the incumbent president, saying he believes that Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov is the chief contender to secure the Kremlin’s support.
