Russia Won’t Succumb to Provocation, Lavrov Says
Russia won’t succumb to provocation, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said. The question of a journalist was that the United States could be stationing the missile defense system in Europe to provoke a response of Russia.
”I’m no judge to the U.S. motives. But I can firmly confirm the words of President Vladimir Putin – we won’t succumb to provocation,” Lavrov said. “Everything that we are doing and will be doing rests upon our commitment – to do everything so that Russia won’t be exposed to additional threats.”
The military masterminds of Russia will be making decisions required by the situation to ensure defense capability of the country. “They will be doing it in view of the need to find an optimal, not hang-the-expense response,” the minister concluded.
The U.S. plans to station a missile defense shield in Europe is sure to steal the show at the G8 summit that starts in Germany today. According to the United States, the shield is meant to counter a potential threat of some rogue nations, first of all Iran and North Korea, and poses no threat to Russia.
But Russia’s sentiment is clearly militant despite all soothing statements of the West. President Putin, for instance, hinted yesterday that Russia may aim its missiles at the military facilities of Europe.
